Going Rogue
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (John 14:5).
It’s a fair question. If there is one thing that I know about Jesus, it is that He is consistently unpredictable. The original ‘rogue’ leader (not in the dishonest or scoundrel sense, but definitely a renegade, departing from the norm), one never really knew where he was going next. Not sure he even knew. Once Jesus even said that He did nothing except what He saw the Father doing (John 5:19).
And so Thomas asks a great question: ‘If you are so spontaneous, so radical, so rogue … how can we know the way?’ It’s a question that I share with the disciple. How am I to figure out what to do, how to pursue this ministry, or for that matter, how to just love my fellow man, when it seems that the way is never as clearly marked as I would like?
Jesus’ response: “I am the way…” (v.6). Many have used this answer to prove the exclusivity of Christianity, and that may very well be true, but Jesus isn’t arguing theologies here, He is answering a very honest question from a man, who just like me, is trying to figure this Jesus thing out.
You see, Thomas (and me, I fear), had things backwards. He assumed that he needed to know where he was going in order to choose the correct trail. Our Lord’s answer was that, ‘no Thomas, you don’t need to know where we are going, you just need to pick the correct path, and I am that path.’ Jesus is inviting us to keep our eyes focused on Him, and only Him. It seems so counter intuitive, so blind, so much of … faith.
With all respect to Mrs. Palin, it is the original ‘Going Rogue.’
To the King,
David

Wow David you really nailed it here. I have been in this place lately where I am wanting clarity as to what direction to head and now I know. Follow Him!
