Boundaries
Over the past several days now, I have had a section of scripture on my mind. It comes from the book of Job and is as follows...
"This far you may come and no further..." (Job 38:11)
Now for any of you who saw the movie The DaVinci Code, you might remember this verse from the movie. The scene in which this verse is uttered is pretty early on in the movie and is pretty memorable. But this is not the reason why this verse has been on my mind lately.
Contextually, this verse is speaking about the authority of God as it pertains to all things. Specifically, it speaks about the boundaries that God has established over the waters of the earth and how they cannot extend beyond those boundaries. Relationally, it speaks about the dynamic between a perfect and complete Father and a less than perfect and incomplete child. Spiritually, it is a very vivid reminder that although we may at times wrongfully assume that God has forgotten about us, there is much more going on than what our limited vision and understanding often comprehends.
As Christians, when we come into a relationship with God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we cease to live independently from our Heavenly Father (see Galatians 2:20). In our new life, we experience the fully beauty and authority of the living God made manifest in our daily lives. Furthermore, we are no longer subjected to the boundaries that have kept us apart from God. In other words, unlike all other things within the world, there are no areas pertaining to God that we are forbidden to seek out, explore and experience relationally through Christ. And yet, there are battles that each of us face daily that keep us and distract us from living our lives in the fullness of this relationship. Whom, my brothers and sisters in Christ, would you suppose would object to and oppose this sort of relational life with God through Christ?
What are and where are the battles in your life today? Right now - at this very moment? The possibilities are endless: relationships, economics, addictions, etc., etc. As those who live relationally with God through Christ, what areas of our daily lives to we need to establish boundaries and say this far you may come and no further?
May God lead you and guide you as you examine the battles in your life and begin the process of establishing boundaries on those things that are not of or from God.
Your brother in Christ,
Jim
