Springtime and War
In the spring, at the time that kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army … But David remained in Jerusalem.
2 Samuel 2:1
We are very blessed. Living on a small acreage on a hill, our home is surrounded by hundreds of trees. In the winter, the place can look pretty barren, but now with spring in full swing, the leaves are once again returning, ushering in the beauty of life. It is a time of freshness, splendor, and renewal. However I need to remind myself, that it is also still a time of war.
The temptation in the spring is often to let my guard down, relax a little and enjoy life. Not that any of that is bad, in fact, I think it is a gift from our King; but at the same time I need to be cognizant that our enemy is not taking a break. The battle still rages; and perhaps even more now. You see, this is the time that kingdoms advance on the unsuspecting. The beauty of spring can lull us into a time of apathy that opens the door for Satan to bring about his plans, and so it is a time for kings, for us, to not lay down our weapons but rather to go to war. Our kingdoms, that which God has entrusted each of us with (be that our families, our lives, our ministries) need us now more than ever.
The problem is that we would rather stay home, in the castle, and let someone else fight our battles. Like David, we too feel that we deserve a break after a long hard winter. But allow me to warn you brothers, just as I am warning myself, the comfort of the castle can prove a much more dangerous place to be. It is there that we often allow our eyes to wonder and our hearts to long for that which they were never meant for.
And so I invite you to join Joab and the rest of the king’s men on the battle field, to rise up again to that to which our King has called us. It’s springtime, and it’s once again time to fight for the kingdom.
To the King,
David
