Thundershowers and The Holy Spirit
I was sitting out on the deck behind our home early this morning enjoying a cup of coffee when I was surprised by a sudden Spring thunderstorm. Within just a matter of minutes it went from calm and muggy to a downpour of heavy rain. The North wind that accompanied the storm caused the large trees behind our home to literally dance in the shower as their leaves and large branches swayed from side to side. They almost seemed to be rejoicing in the life that the rain brought; a type of celebration proclaiming: more, more, keep it coming!
It reminded me of what Pentecost must have been like for those first disciples in the upper room, when the Spirit of the Living God descended on them in the tongues of fire. Likewise surprised by a sudden outpouring of life, the book of Acts relates the story of such celebration that the onlookers assumed the disciples were drunk.
Those trees almost appeared drunk this morning. What else would make them crazy enough to dance in a thunderstorm? I have been there myself at times; dancing in the presence and goodness of my King, rejoicing in the movement and outpouring of his Spirit. And I believe that He wants to do that more: to surprise us with His Life, to rain down on us the Spring showers that refresh and that offer the strength needed for the hot summer ahead.
I am praying that you and I both would be surprised by that Life, that Holy Spirit, and that as we do, we would have a renewed sense of the place in this great story where our King has planted us.
To the King,
David
