Hole Hearted
I cannot get this song out of my head so I will share with the rest of you. Time travel with me, if you will, to the 90's...
"This hear of stone is where I hide,
These feet of clay kept warm inside,
Day by day less satisfied,
Not fade away before I die,
Rivers flow into the sea,
Yet even the sea is not so full of me,
If I'm not blind why can't I see,
That circle can't fit where a square should be,
There's a hole in my heart that can only be filled by you,
And this hole in my heart can't be filled with the things I do,
There a hole in my heart that can only be filled by you,
Should have known from the start I'd fall short with the things I do,
Hole hearted
Hole hearted
Hole hearted
Hole hearted"
This is the final part of the song entitled, yes, you guessed it, "Hole Hearted" by the group Extreme. This song was popular (well, sort of) during the mid to late part of the 90's and I heard it over the weekend for the first time probably since then. As I mentioned before, it has been stuck in my head since I heard it and until this morning, I wasn't really sure why. God answered the why...
As was (and still is) typical of the time, we look for all kinds of things to "fill" our emotional needs. Sex, alcohol, drugs, food - you know the list. And yet if we are honest, those "things" never work. Temporary relief may be found, but before long, the void that we are looking to "fill" comes rushing back. This place that we find ourselves in is just where our enemy, the evil one, desires us to be - isn't it. Looking for answers to emotional needs that we cannot seem to find anywhere. And yet - there is an answer. Jesus.....
In Matthew 21:8, Jesus says the following to his disciples...
"...Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name claiming, 'I am he,' and 'The time is near.' Do not follow them."
While this scripture is taken out of context, it's message is still applicable for the situation. There are so many things in the world today that can enter into our lives and our hearts that have the ability to lead us astray that we must be very intentional with what we allow to enter. For me, and it probably wasn't what the members of the band intended when they wrote the lyrics, that is what I am taking away from that song today.
Thank you Jesus!
Your brother in Christ,
Jim
